SHOT show debuts new hunting and shooting products

Below are some excerpts of an article by Nick Hromiak of the Allentown Outdoor Recreation Examiner

I know that the Game Glide is not listed in Nick’s New Hunting Products, but we have some great news coming up… Be patient…

My favorite new product is one of the last ones listed in the article. It is the cell phone muff called the TextPac™. It is innovative and solves a common hunting problem, just like the Game Glide does. Their site is: http://www.textpac.com/. I do use a muff while hunting. I an not too manly to admit it. And I love it. It allow me to use no gloves or lighter gloves. Coincidentally, my old style muff broke this year. I will have to give the TextPac a shot. Maybe I can convince the company to give me one to try… Hint Hint…

Here are some excerpts of Nick’s article about some cool new products:

The Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT) is the largest trade show of its kind in the world. And last weeks three-day show had the largest attendance of any past shows. There were more than 61,000 gun dealers and buyers from 50 states and 100 countries in attendance at the Sands Expo Convention Center in Vegas. Some 1,600 exhibitors debuted or displayed their latest offerings be it guns, ammo, clothing, tree stands or a myriad of other gear including that for law enforcement domestically and internationally.

So what’s hot for 2012? Here’s a very small sampling of some interestingly new guns and gear for the upcoming hunting season and home security.

LONG GUNS: While every long-gun maker had a new model or enhancements to existing models, Mossberg (Mossberg.com) probably had the most interesting. Their Flex TLS 12-gauge pump shotgun is modular in that by releasing three tool-less locking connectors, the stocks, forends and recoil pads can be changed in seconds for a variety of shooting applications. And that includes being configurable for everything from goose hunting to tactical shotgun applications…

HANDGUNS: While Glock debuted more Gen4 models and Springfield Armory showcased their small XD-M .45 model autoloader, Sig Sauer introduced their P224, a 6.7-inch long subcompact all metal autoloader in 9mm (12 round capacity), or, 11 round .357SIG and 40S&W calibers (Sigsauer.com).

AMMO: There were loads of new offerings here but the most promising, especially for those deer hunting in our Special Regulation Areas, was Federal’s (federalpremium.com) Trophy Copper 12-gauge sabot slugs that are capable of being effective out to 150 yards. Federal was able to accomplish this by re-programming its trajectory and bullet design while the sabot uses a metal pusher plate on the back instead of plastic, the latter of which has a tendency to fail at high velocity…

CELL PHONE MUFF: Smartphone using sportsmen who just have to text while sitting in a tree stand or goose blind during cold days, need a TextPac (textpac.com). The TextPac is actually a novel hand warming muff that has a covered, protected window pocket in the middle to hold a phone, iPod or GPS device for easy access and use. Its maker says it can also extend battery life by keeping it out of extreme cold. It’s available in three models and in Realtree AP, Mossy Oak Break Up and black color…

Hello everyone. As many of you know, we are based in Pennsylvania and many of our users are in PA.

Here are some excerpts from a press release from the PA Game Commission regarding the 2012-13 seasons and bag limits. Check the seasons and limits out because they are not final. ”The public may offer comments on all proposed 2012-13 seasons and bag limits…”

The key points that jumped out at us are the following:

The Board of Game Commissioners gave preliminary approval to a slate of deer seasons for 2012-13 that retains the split, five-day antlered deer season (Nov. 26-30) and seven-day concurrent season (Dec. 1-8) in 11 Wildlife Management Units.

allow Mentored Youth Hunting Program participants to take part in fall turkey seasons

expanded bear hunting opportunities in urban/suburban Wildlife Management Units (WMUs)

additional small game season dates prior to Christmas

the addition of WMU 4C for bobcat hunting and trapping

the addition of WMUs 2G and 4D for fisher trapping

various changes to the beaver trapping seasons to reduce bag limits in WMUs 3A and 3D and to increase bag limits in WMU 5D to address nuisance complaints

The Key two points for me that were new for 2011 and kept for 2012-13 relate the 3-up rule, which I like. The other is the split of the Doe Season from Buck season for certain WMUs. I am not a fan of this for the 2A WMU. What do you think?

Release #007-12

January 24, 2012

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners today gave preliminary approval to hunting and trapping seasons and bag limits for 2012-13, including a move to allow Mentored Youth Hunting Program participants to take part in fall turkey seasons.

Other changes include expanded bear hunting opportunities in urban/suburban Wildlife Management Units (WMUs); additional small game season dates prior to Christmas; the addition of WMU 4C for bobcat hunting and trapping; the addition of WMUs 2G and 4D for fisher trapping; various changes to the beaver trapping seasons to reduce bag limits in WMUs 3A and 3D and to increase bag limits in WMU 5D to address nuisance complaints

The public may offer comments on all proposed 2012-13 seasons and bag limits, as well as other Board actions, between now and the Board’s next meeting, April 23-24, at which time the Board is scheduled to finalize seasons and bag limits for 2012-13.

Also, the Board will receive staff recommendations for antlerless deer license allocations for the 22 WMUs at its April meeting. Deer harvest estimates for the 2011-12 seasons will be available in mid-March.

Following are several articles on meeting highlights.

BOARD PROPOSES TO RETAIN SPLIT RIFLE DEER SEASONS

The Board of Game Commissioners gave preliminary approval to a slate of deer seasons for 2012-13 that retains the split, five-day antlered deer season (Nov. 26-30) and seven-day concurrent season (Dec. 1-8) in 11 Wildlife Management Units. The list includes (WMUs) 2A, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F, 2G, 3B, 3C, 4B, 4D and 4E. The package also retains the two-week (Nov. 26-Dec. concurrent, antlered and antlerless deer season in WMUs 1A, 1B, 2B, 3A, 3D, 4A, 4C, 5A, 5B, 5C and 5D.

Hunters with DMAP antlerless deer permits may use them on the lands for which they were issued during any established deer season, and will continue to be permitted to harvest antlerless deer from Nov. 26-Dec. 8 in WMUs 2A, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F, 2G, 3B, 3C, 4B, 4D and 4E. Fees for DMAP permits are $10 for residents and $35 for nonresidents.

Additionally, the Board also gave preliminary approval to retain the use of crossbows in the archery deer seasons. The Board took this action by removing the sunset date inserted in the regulations when crossbows were first permitted to be used in the archery deer seasons.

The Board retained the antler restrictions enacted for the 2011-12 seasons, which includes the “three-up” on one side, no counting a brow tine, provision for the western Wildlife Management Units of 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B and 2D, and the three points on one side in all other WMUs.

BOARD CLOSES PIKE RUN WILD PHEASANT RECOVERY AREA

The Board of Game Commissioners today gave preliminary approval to retain four Wild Pheasant Recovery Areas (WPRAs) for the 2012-13 seasons, while closing the Pike Run WPRA in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The agency’s Ring-necked Pheasant Management Plan seeks to restore self-sustaining and huntable populations of wild pheasants in suitable habitats, and specifically calls for the creation of WPRAs. The agency is releasing wild-trapped pheasants into these areas, with a goal of achieving a density of 10 hen pheasants per square mile.

“The Pike Run WPRA in southwestern Pennsylvania has concluded and habitat patch analysis shows that Pike Run meets only one of five targets in the pheasant habitat model,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “Pheasant densities are at one hen per square mile, which is far short of the 10 hens per square mile objective.

“In light of the area’s habitat characteristics and low pheasant densities, and in keeping with the pheasant management plan, Wildlife Management Unit 2A, which includes the previously designated Pike Run WPRA, is to be opened to hunting male pheasants and stocking of game farm pheasants is to be reinstated beginning with the 2012-13 season.”

Under the WPRA program, small game hunting is prohibited in the designated areas, as well as the release of any artificially propagated pheasants – including Game Commission-raised pheasants. Also, to limit disturbances to nesting hen pheasants, dog training of any manner and small game hunting is prohibited in WPRAs from the first Sunday in February through July 31 each year.

The Board also took preliminary steps to allow for crow hunting within WPRAs, which would be added to the exceptions that allow for groundhog and waterfowl hunting within WPRAs, and opened WMU 2B to the hunting of male and female pheasants.

“Working with major partners, such as Pheasants Forever, the California University of Pennsylvania and local landowners, we already have a jump start on creating WPRAs,” Roe said. “These groups have invested in creating the necessary pheasant habitat in these areas of the state.

“The Game Commission will continue to raise and release pheasants on public lands with suitable pheasant habitat each fall. And, with the additional revenues made available through Marcellus shale well leases on State Game Lands, we will increase our pheasant production level to 200,000 birds for the upcoming season….”

BOARD VOTES TO EXPAND BEAR SEASONS

The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners today proposed allowing hunters in Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) 1A, 2B, 5B, 5C and 5D to harvest black bears during all deer seasons from September through early-December, as well as during statewide bear seasons. If approved in April, bear hunters will be able to participate in an archery bear season in WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D from Sept. 15-28; in WMUs 1A, 2B, 5B, 5C and 5D from Sept. 29 until Nov. 10; a muzzleloader bear season in WMUs 1A, 2B, 5B, 5C and 5D from Oct. 13-20; a firearms bear season in WMUs 1A, 2B, 5B, 5C and 5D, from Nov. 26-Dec. 8. Only 1 bear may be taken during the license year.

The Board also proposed retaining the statewide archery bear season, four-day general firearms bear season and extended seasons in all or portions of certain WMUs.

“Pennsylvania’s black bear population is larger and more widely distributed than ever, and bear-human incidents are becoming commonplace, especially in more developed areas,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “Continued expansion of residential development into areas occupied by black bears has resulted in more frequent sightings and encounters between people and bears.

“In WMUs 1A, 2B, 5B, 5C and 5D, all with relatively high human population densities, there currently are low bear densities. The Game Commission wants to continue to have a minimum number of bears, and the agency wants hunters to have an opportunity to play an important role in bear population management in these urban/suburban areas.”

The slate of 2012 bear seasons, which must be given final approval in April before taking effect, includes: a statewide five-day archery bear season (Nov. 12-16); a four-day statewide bear season that will open on Saturday, Nov. 17, and then continue on Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 19-21; and a concurrent bear/deer season in WMUs 3D, 4C, 4D and 4E, Nov. 28-Dec. 1.

Also, a concurrent bear/deer season has been proposed to be held Nov. 26-Dec. 1 in the following….

BOARD MOVES TO ADD FALL TURKEY TO THE MYHP LINE-UP

The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners today gave preliminary approval to fall turkey seasons for 2012 and spring gobbler dates for 2013, and took action to add fall turkey to the line-up for those participating in the Mentored Youth Hunting Program (MYHP). If approved at its April meeting, adult mentors would be able to transfer one fall turkey tag to a mentored youth if the youth harvests a fall turkey.

            The fall season dates for 2012: Oct. 27-Nov. 10 and Nov. 22-24 for Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) 1A, 1B, 2A, 2C, 2D, 2E, 4A, 4B and 4D; Oct. 27-Nov. 16 and Nov. 22-24 for WMUs 2B, 2F, 2G, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D, 4C and 4E.

Also, fall season dates of Oct. 30-Nov. 1 were set for WMU 5A; and WMUs 5B, 5C and 5D will remain closed for the fall seasons.

In related action, the Board gave preliminary approval to remove the sporting arm limitations for fall turkey season in WMUs 1A, 1B and 2A, which presently requires the use of shotguns, crossbows or bows. While this move will allow fall turkey hunters to choose to use rifles in these three WMUs, the use of rifles in Allegheny County, which is a designated Special Regulations Area county, will continue to be prohibited.

For the 2013 spring gobbler season, which is proposed to run from April 27-May 31, the Board continued the change in legal hunting hours to reflect the following: from April 27 until May 11, legal shooting hours will be one-half hour before sunrise until noon timeframe; and from May 13-31, hunters will be able to hunt all day, from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.

The Board proposed holding the one-day Spring Gobbler Youth Hunt on April 20, which will run from one-half hour before sunrise until noon. All junior license holders and Mentored Youth Hunting Program permit holders can participate in this special one-day hunt, as well as the other spring season dates.

Additionally, the Board took steps to allow MYHP permit holders to participate in fall turkey seasons. If approved in April, fall turkey would be added to the list of eligible species that MYHP permit holders could pursue. The present list of legal species for the MYHP is: antlered deer; antlerless deer, with the transfer of an antlerless deer license from the adult mentor; coyotes; groundhogs; squirrels and spring gobbler….

Collin Hohman was born in the outdoors. He has been hunting and fishing his whole life. He got into bow hunting 3 years ago and here is his first deer with a bow.

Colin told us that he had to drag the deer up 2 hills before field dressing it, so the Game Glide came in handy! We love helping all generations of hunters enjoy their days in the field as much as possible (especially the young-uns!)…

He shot her at 31 yards with his Hoyt bow it was recorded and is currently on YouTube.

Check out and congratulate young Collin on his You Tube site: http://www.youtube.com/hoytbonecollector

About Accept the Challenge TV:

Archery Adventures, in association with Higher Frequency Productions, is proud to announce the airing of our 4th season…

Accept The Challenge TV returns for a new season. We have some incredible over the shoulder in your face action for deer, turkey, hogs, Red Stag and much more… Champion Turkey caller Joe Drake joins us this year for what is sure to be our best season ever.

Scott Carroll and Brad Frost will take you from Africa to Wyoming in pursuit of some of the world’s finest animals.

Scott Carroll

Growing up camping and fishing most of the spring and summer months with his family, Scott’s love for the outdoors started at a very young age. His passion for the sport increased through squirrel hunting trips with his Granddad, Dad and younger brother. At the age of 12, Scott’s Dad watched as Scott took his first deer and his passion soon became an obsession.

Brad Frost

Brad Frost grew up amidst a family that has a passion for the sport of hunting. Following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, Brad naturally became a hunting enthusiast. As his devotion to hunting increased, Brad began to study different animal species, including elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, hog, turkey, antelope, and many other non-game species. After spending many years traveling across the U.S. to hunt various species of game, Brad began to explore new territory by traveling to Africa to pursue his hunting dreams.

      Who is T.R.U.E. Outdoors?

We are avid hunters, who hunt what we can, when we can, within the ordinary working man’s budget.

What does T.R.U.E. Outdoors stand for?

TRADITION – Each of us was raised in families who hunted. We learned from our Dads, Grandfathers, Uncles, and Brothers. We want to continue to pass this hunting TRADITION down to our family, but also to all those who do not have the luxury of being raised in a hunting family.

RESPECT – We hunt on public and private land where RESPECT can mean many things. On public land RESPECT means working with other hunters for the best of our sport. On private land RESPECT means knowing the land owner and treating them well. Finally, at all times whether public or private land RESPECT means caring for the land and animals God has blessed us with. We want to teach all aspects of RESPECT to both new and old hunters alike.

UNITED – We believe our passion in hunting requires being UNITED with all hunters. We feel that we have many opponents and that by being UNITED with one another is yet another key to passing down the TRADITION of our sport and teach RESPECT to others as well. We desire to UNITE with other hunters who share our passion.

ETHICAL – Finally we believe it is important to be ETHICAL in all phases of our sport, and to teach these ETHICS to the novice and seasoned hunters.

       What does T.R.U.E. Outdoors do?

We are active and interactive in the Facebook social media realm.

We teach and remind hunters of TRADITION, RESPECT, UNITED, and ETHICAL aspects of our sport throughout the year.

We support and promote other organizations with similar beliefs.

We poll our fans for input and share stories of success, failure, and of lessons learned.

We promote and market our sponsors, whose products we believe in.

We support both local and national clubs and benefits.

We promote these organizations through word of mouth.

We financially support these organizations with our own hard earned money.

We attend local and regional hunting show exhibits.

We speak with many vendors at the shows.

by Brandon Smith, D&DH reader

Not until last season, when I strapped on a monitor, have I ever considered how hard my heart beats while hunting.

Although opinion varies, many doctors caution against exercising at a level greater than 85 percent of a person’s maximum heart rate. This increases the risk of heart attack.

Whether you’re hunting or doing other work, don’t let your heart rate exceed 85% of your maximum rate. As a rule of thumb, your maximum rate is 220 minus your age.

For men, maximum heart rate is calculated by subtracting age from 220. For me, the equation reads 220 – 21 = 199. Eighty-five percent of that is 169.

I found myself battling to keep my heart rate below 169 throughout deer hunting season. Just hiking trails in west Texas, I quickly exceeded my 85 percent maximum. I attained my season high of 201 while pulling a whitetail on a game cart that had two flat tires.

My experiences echoed the results of a study conducted by Michigan’s Beaumont Hospital. Published in 2007 in the American Journal of Cardiology, the study fitted heart monitors on 25 middle-aged hunters, 17 of whom had been diagnosed with coronary artery disease.

During deer season, all but three exceeded the maximum rate they had achieved on a treadmill test. Dragging downed game raised heart rates to the most dangerous levels, but several men experienced jumps into the red zone simply from spotting or shooting at a deer.

According to study co-author Dr. Barry Franklin, the strain hunting puts on the heart is attributed to three factors: hunting’s strenuous nature, the epinephrine (or “excitement”) response upon seeing game and environmental stresses, including cold weather and altitude.

Franklin also notes that many hunters in the study exhibited life-threatening heart-rhythm irregularities (aka cardiac arrhythmia) that had not been apparent on EKG readouts during laboratory treadmill tests. This was a disturbing finding. Heart arrhythmia is the trigger for cardiac arrest.

So what can you do to keep your heart working during the hunting months?

The Top & Most Influential Hunting Blogs

Here is an UPDATE to our very popular post. And don’t forget to click ‘LIKE’ if you want to see more great posts like this! - – One of the bloggers that we wanted to feature on our list, Jay Say from Wired Outdoors, was off in Texas hunting at the time. After his hunt, we were able to catch up with him and updated our list with his information…

When planning our launch for the Game Glide ultra light deer sled, we decided to have a Blog on our website to help keep us in touch with you, the hunters. We felt that the blog would help us to entertain you, while keeping you posted about the cool stuff that is going on with the Game Glide and to help us to get your feedback about it.

After making this decision, we realized that we didn’t know much about blogging, so we started reading other blogs. We found a number of blogs that we really liked due to the quality of their posts and the entertainment/information that they provided to us.

We compiled a list of our favorites and some of the most popular ones on the web for you. The criteria for inclusion on this list is not scientific. The order of this list in NOT important. We didn’t want to rate the blogs becuase they appeal to us and others in different ways, so we are ordering them below in the order that they responded to our request to provide us with a one line summary of their blog and a short quote about why it is successful…

In our opinion, these are ‘The Top & Most Influential Hunting Blogs’:

Wired Outdoors Blog and Wired Outdoors on Facebook - Jay Say described his sites as,

Jason attributes the success of his blog and over 40,000 followers on their Facebook fan page simply to their dedication to all their fans to take them along on every hunt as it is happening!

In Bull&Beavers’ #Power Hunters Series article about Jason Say, they wrote that “the first thing I noticed about Jason is how he uses his voice and reach in social media to give back to his community.”

The Black Bear Blog - Tom from The Black Bear Blog responded,

”The Black Bear Blog is perhaps the only website with as strong a focus on hunting and environmental politics – outdoor punditry at its finest.”
